Women often have bladder problems encompassing
a broad array of symptoms. These problems may range from bladder
irritative symptoms, such as urgency, frequency, and even
urge incontinence, to loss of urine associated with movements
such as coughing, sneezing, or exercise.
Loss of urine associated with bladder over-activity is called
urge incontinence. This type of incontinence often responds
to medication.
Many women suffer from loss of vaginal and pelvic floor support.
Stress urinary incontinence occurs in this situation, and
usually is described as loss of urine with coughing, sneezing,
and physical activity.
History and physical examination may be sufficient to evaluate
and treat the type of incontinence. Additional tests may be
advised in more complicated situations.
Treatment can be very effective. For stress urinary incontinence,
corrective surgical intervention may restore vaginal support
and stop incontinence. Pharmacological intervention for urge
incontinence may be very successful, and lead to positive
changes in bladder function.
