CRYOABLATION for CARCINOMA OF THE PROSTATE

Carcinoma of the prostate has an excellent new option: cryoablation.

Technological advances have made cryoablation of the prostate one of the most exciting advances in the treatment of local carcinoma of the prostate.

Cryoablation is a minimally invasive approach to stage T1-T3 carcinoma of the prostate, demonstrated to be equal to radical prostatectomy and often better than radiation therapy on long term studies out to ten years.

Cryoablation is an easily tolerated procedure. Recovery is rapid, only requiring a short term catheter, and men quickly return to full activities.

Cryoablation is optimal for the patient not an ideal candidate for radical prostatectomy, or who would prefer a non-surgical option. Cryoablation may cause erectile dysfunction, and may not be for a man who is concerned about sexual function. Young men should be advised that studies do not extend past ten years, and radical retropubic prostatectomy may be the best option for this age group.

This procedure should be discussed as first line option with every patient who has localized carcinoma of the prostate!
